What is Geothermal Heating?

Unlike traditional heating systems, geothermal heating uses the stable underground temperature to deliver high-efficiency heat to your home. Since the ground stays a moderately consistent temperature, even with seasonal climate changes, geothermal heat pumps can use it to exchange heat with the earth through a ground heat exchanger.

Geothermal heating is a great energy-efficient and environmentally friendly heating option that is a sustainable energy source. Martinov Home Solutions offers a variety of geothermal heating systems to fit your needs.

There are three common geothermal heating options.

Closed-Loop Geothermal Heating System

Geothermal Heating System
Closed-loop heating systems can be refrigerant-based or water-based and circulate antifreeze or water through closed-loop plastic pipes that are buried beneath the ground.

There are three closed-loop configuration options available:

  1. Horizontal Loop: This configuration is one of the most cost-effective options for residential customers that have sufficient land available.
  2. Pond/Lake Loop: This system is usually the least expensive option available and runs a supply line pipe underground from a building to a body of water. The site must have a sufficient body of water for the pond/lake loop to work properly.
  3. Vertical Loop: Commonly found in schools and commercial buildings, vertical loop systems are used when there is an insufficient amount of land available.

Hybrid Geothermal Heating System

A hybrid system uses a variety of geothermal resources with outdoor air and other technologies. If suitable, this system can significantly reduce the cost of geothermal heating and cooling. The hybrid system is especially effective for sites that have greater cooling needs than heating needs.

Open-Loop Geothermal Heating System

Open-loop systems use well water or surface body water as a heat exchange fluid that circulates through the heat pumps. While the open-loop system is a great heating option, it is only practical for sites that have a large supply of relatively clean water.
